Don’t think I’ve ever quite seen a cayenne sky like this one—last night’s showing in the barnyard. Fare well, August. https://jmcd.me/2C5AdTm

I can’t quite describe the feeling of walking into your kitchen and finding a bounty of sunflowers left by some of your dearest friends. We’ve had a loss in our family recently. (Jesse, the kids and I are all fine.) To all of our friends who have circled around us, bringing us food, hugs, whiskey, and more whiskey—it means so much to us. To Miranda, Hannah, Casey, and Kit for keeping the farm humming along, we love you all. It is a strange sensation—feeling all the fiery warmth of the beloved connections still around us, contrasted with the one we’re missing. Thanks to all of you who tip the scales toward love when you see grief. 🌻 https://jmcd.me/2BBUuj1

These two newbies were born yesterday, so they got a special lift from Miranda during today’s move, with their mom staying close beside. We got two new breeding rams last fall, Rohan and Gimli. Rohan was in with the breeding ewes for a month on his own, and then Gimli joined him for a second. So we had a two month window of potential pregnancies, which makes for a long lambing season. We’re expecting one last ewe to give birth, and then we should be done for the season. And then maybe this hardworking shepherdess can sit down for a minute? https://jmcd.me/2L8yfWh

Folks! Next Saturday is it! The day that a dance company, a live sextet, a food truck, craft beer and wine, pie, ice cream, and face painting all come together at the farm!

Bring your friends, come hungry, and join us while the farm transforms into something magical for the evening.

Mio Bistro will be serving Studio Hill chicken tacos 🌮🌮🌮 and tikka masala, in addition to salads and other goodies. We’ve got #biodynamic wines from @balovineyards. We’ve got local craft beer. We’ve got pies from the world famous @wingandaprayerfarm !
Doors open at 4. We’ll do a farm tour shortly afterward. The performance begins at 5.

Kids and families are most welcome!
Tickets are available online and at the gate. https://jmcd.me/2mh1sQb

Here’s our broiler coop, on the right, built in 2017, alongside our egg-mobile, built in 2016. They are very similar, but we did make a few updates with the second version. The egg mobile has a big, human-sized ramp that folds down. This turned out to be really heavy, and gets heavier when it gets snowed on. So for the wagon on the right, we made a light weight chicken ramp which slides underneath the wagon while it’s being moved and is set up like this once it’s in place. Then, the door above it has two parts, one large human-sized door that hinges open, and a smaller chicken door within that. It gives us more options for cover from wind and weather, but still allows us to get inside if need be. The floor of the broiler wagon is mostly open air hardware cloth, so that droppings can fall through and land on the field, instead of building up into a nasty mat that needs frequent cleaning. We’ll be building more of these in the future, and I’m sure each model will contain new tweaks and improvements. This is what makes our brains happy—imagining, inventing and re-inventing. https://jmcd.me/2KWgV62
