These two newbies were born yesterday, so they got a special lift from Miranda during today’s move, with their mom staying close beside. We got two new breeding rams last fall, Rohan and Gimli. Rohan was in with the breeding ewes for a month on his own, and then Gimli joined him for a second. So we had a two month window of potential pregnancies, which makes for a long lambing season. We’re expecting one last ewe to give birth, and then we should be done for the season. And then maybe this hardworking shepherdess can sit down for a minute? https://jmcd.me/2L8yfWh

Here’s our broiler coop, on the right, built in 2017, alongside our egg-mobile, built in 2016. They are very similar, but we did make a few updates with the second version. The egg mobile has a big, human-sized ramp that folds down. This turned out to be really heavy, and gets heavier when it gets snowed on. So for the wagon on the right, we made a light weight chicken ramp which slides underneath the wagon while it’s being moved and is set up like this once it’s in place. Then, the door above it has two parts, one large human-sized door that hinges open, and a smaller chicken door within that. It gives us more options for cover from wind and weather, but still allows us to get inside if need be. The floor of the broiler wagon is mostly open air hardware cloth, so that droppings can fall through and land on the field, instead of building up into a nasty mat that needs frequent cleaning. We’ll be building more of these in the future, and I’m sure each model will contain new tweaks and improvements. This is what makes our brains happy—imagining, inventing and re-inventing. https://jmcd.me/2KWgV62
It’s your Saturday morning lamb-gram! The flock is pretty quiet midday, usually taking a prolonged siesta in the shade. But in early morning and early evening, the lambs exhibit what we call “popcorn behavior”, and you’ll see them suddenly bounce up above the grass, and then disappear again. It looks like sheer delight in their own new-found strength and agility, after the first week on shaky legs. https://jmcd.me/2zjqyan
The pigs are growing fast, and soon they’ll graduate from their starter paddock to the food forest. Can’t wait to see them get to work, and start rooting around on this piece of land that’s so full of possibilities. https://jmcd.me/2tVa96h
Hey folks! @modfarm is letting us drop in on their feed for the weekend and give a tour of Studio Hill. Follow along! I got the feels and included feminist wilderness quotes—You’re welcome!!! 💪🐑🌞 https://jmcd.me/2N7V0Y1
Anti gravity lambs are on the loose! https://jmcd.me/2tEsNQt
Ben the Donkey – making cute things even cuter, since… whenever he was born? We don’t have any hard data on a birthday, or year. We’re guessing he’s in his late teens or early twenties. Perhaps we should just pick a day so that he can be appropriately celebrated. 💫 If anyone has a date to nominate for Ben the Donkey day, let it be known! https://jmcd.me/2KecT9B
And the winner is…. ALL OF YOU! Because you get a picture of Jesse embracing a plate of cookies with his face painted with flowers. And on a Wednesday no less! .
That glorious gift aside, we held ticket a giveaway contest over the last few days, and we are announcing a winner for that…
Congratulations to @eggstreetstudio ! You won two tickets to this summer’s Farm to Ballet performance here at Studio Hill! July 21st. Doors open at 4. Performance at 5.

The pigs are here! It was a slow start to this season, but now we’re running at full speed, with the bees, chickens, turkeys, pigs, and sheep all in place. The pigs will be helping us with our long term dream project, the perennial food forest. They’ll be rooting around and helping us open up a tangled lot that was clear cut more than a decade ago. Someday, we hope this lot will be the most diverse, productive, and biologically dense place on the farm. And these guys are going to help us make it happen. https://jmcd.me/2xQliKQ
